Pain involving the nerve can best be described as a shooting, stabbing or even burning pain. The onset of pain can be sharp and sudden and areas with pain are very sensitive to touch, temperature and stimuli that would not normally cause pain, such as objects brushing against the skin.
What is Nerve Pain (Neuropathy)?
Nerve pain — also known as neuropathic pain — is caused by an ailment that affects the nerves that carry sensation to the brain. Patients often describe this type of pain as a type of pain that feels nothing like common types of pain that involve muscles, bones, and ligaments.
Pain involving the nerve can best be described as a shooting, stabbing or even burning pain. The onset of pain can be sharp and sudden. Areas with pain are very sensitive to touch, temperature and stimuli that would not normally cause pain, such as objects brushing against the skin. Many patients report their pain is worse at night, causing restlessness and a disruption in sleep.
Effective Treatment for Nerve Pain
At Shepherd Health, we use a number of different treatment modalities to effectively treat nerve pain. Active release and massage therapy are used to treat the tissues and tendons that are causing nerve pain. Cold laser therapy treats pain caused by carpal tunnel syndrome on a cellular level by promoting cells to produce more energy, in turn promoting healing. As light energy is transformed into biochemical energy in the body, the blood supply to damaged cells is increased and the healing process is stimulated. Shockwave therapy and nerve flossing are some of the many other treatments we use for nerve pain here at Shephard Health.
