Cold Laser Therapy For Chiropractic Use

What is Cold Laser Therapy?

Low-level laser therapy, also known as LLLT, does not produce heat, which is why it’s called cold laser therapy. It is used at some medical facilities, such as in certain chiropractic practices, as an alternative to surgery or medication. It is used to stimulate healing naturally with the use of a strong beam of focused light.

 How Does It Work?

Cold Laser Therapy improves circulation and speeds up tissue healing using a directional laser.

It uses visible light radiation with wavelengths between 400 to 760  nanometers to produce a small photochemical reaction in the cells. The cells will absorb the light energy and convert it into cell energy. This will reduce inflammation and promote the regeneration of damaged tissue.

This laser is not what is often used in other surgeries, as it is lower power. The laser penetrates the skin, although this causes no damage or pain to the patient. Instead, the cells absorb the light photons. This facilitates cellular processes in otherwise dormant cells and the treatment does not affect healthy cells.

What Can I Expect From A Session Of Cold Laser Therapy?

The laser is a handheld device that the chiropractor will hold to the area of treatment. Because the laser is not hot like other medical lasers, you won’t feel anything other than the physical laser device against your skin and very mild warmth. You may also be asked to wear protective eyewear, as the laser can be damaging if pointed at the eyes. The session will only last about 15 minutes, although this can vary depending on the size of the area being treated. Multiple treatments may be needed.

What Is It Used On?

Cold laser therapy is used on any areas that are suffering from pain in the tissue, tendons, ligaments, nerves or muscles. Cold laser therapy is most commonly used to relieve:

  • Back pain
