How A Chiropractor Addresses Knee Pain
Causes Of Knee Pain
- Chronic Injuries
Chronic injuries develop slowly over time and are often related to repetitive use. These conditions slowly degrade the cartilage and increase joint inflammation. If you have a chronic knee injury, you will likely notice the knee becoming stiffer over time and a gradual increase in pain. Some common forms of chronic knee conditions include osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. - Acute Injuries
These are the types of abrupt injuries typically caused by sudden impact, an improper turn, or hyperextension of the knee. Acute injuries often happen during sports, although they can also be caused by motor vehicle accidents, trips/falls, or workplace accidents. Acute injuries can sometimes heal with at-home care although a chiropractor may be able to speed up your recovery or help you if your injury leaves you with lingering pain or stiffness.
Chiropractic Care Options
When you visit a chiropractor, they will initially assess not only your knee but all areas that may affect or be affected by your knee. This includes the hips, lower back, feet, ankles, and anything in the lower portion of the body that may be altering the way you walk or otherwise causing strain on your knee. Your chiropractor will then use either one chiropractic technique or a combination of techniques to reduce inflammation of the joints, reduce pain, and improve mobility. Here are some of the chiropractic techniques your chiropractor may use:
- Chiropractic Care And Alignment. A chiropractic treatment will align the joints to reduce pain and increase range of motion and flexibility. Because the body works together and the knees carry the vast majority of the body’s weight, if any aspect is misaligned it can cause damage to the knees. Your chiropractor may align the knees, but they may also align the hips, spine, or other areas that can be causing problems. A part of chiropractic care is assessing the root of the problem to relieve tension from the muscles, ligaments, and joints.
- Shockwave Therapy. Also known as Extracorporeal SHOCK WAVE Therapy (ESWT), this technique uses directed bursts of high-pressure sound waves that travel through the skin to target musculoskeletal tissue such as muscles, tendons, ligaments, and nerves. Shockwave Therapy helps to break down fibrous scar tissue that builds up over time and can limit mobility in the knee and cause stiffness, pain, and inflammation.
- Cold Laser Therapy. This type of therapy uses a strong beam of light that, despite being a laser, does not produce any heat. This light can be targeted at specific areas and tuned to specific wavelengths to help repair the cells of injured tendons, ligaments, nerves, and muscles.
- Active Release Techniques (ART®). This soft tissue injury technique focuses on moving and manipulating injured tissue. This dynamic movement will help identify, isolate, and target the affected area to break up restricting scar tissue. This break-up of scar tissue promotes greater blood flow and faster healing of the injured area.
