sports injury therapy in Calgary

June is National Men’s Health Month in Canada, an opportunity to talk about the injuries common to men and conditions affecting men’s health and to explore tools and resources that ensure optimal health and quality of life today and for a lifetime.

Participation in sports is a valued aspect of quality of life and good health for many men. But sports activities can lead to sports injuries and men of all ages and physical conditions suffer from the symptoms of acute and chronic pain. Here we discuss 5 of the most common sports injuries in men and the treatment options for healing and rehabilitation.

Plantar Fasciitis

What Is It?

Plantar Fasciitis is an injury to the connective tissue on the soles of the feet. It commonly occurs in men who participate in sports that require lots of short bursts of sprinting as in tennis or soccer or lengthy runs such as marathons. Plantar fasciitis can cause sharp or dull pain, a burning sensation across the sole of the foot, and stiffness in the heel and foot arch.

Ankle Sprain

What Is It?

An ankle sprain is also known as a twisted ankle, and can result in stretched or torn tendons and ligaments. Ankle sprains are common injuries in almost any sport that involves running (especially on an uneven surface) like field sports, or jumping as in basketball. A sprain can cause pain, swelling, and reduced movement and mobility. A minor sprain can usually be treated with a RICE approach (Rest, Ice, Compression, and Elevation), but serious ankle sprains require more intense treatment and possibly surgery.

Knee Ligament Strain

What Is It?

Our knees are complex joints that are made up of numerous ligaments and tendons, cartilage, and meniscus. Intense sports that involve frequent turning and pivoting, and prolonged activities such as long distance running are common causes of knee ligament strain injuries. This type of injury can be minor and be resolved with RICE, but a more serious injury such as an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury could require intense rehabilitation or surgery.

Quad Strain

What Is It?

Your quadricep is the large muscle that runs down the front of your thigh. This muscle is one of your strongest muscles and helps your legs support your body weight. It is vital for peak performance in almost every sport. Quad strains are common when you have not warmed up sufficiently before your sporting activity and quads are susceptible to injury due to overuse and fatigue. A quad strain will cause pain and it can also impact movement and mobility.

Hamstring Pull

What Is It?

A hamstring pull is an injury to the group of three muscles that run along the back of your thigh. It can also include an injury to the connecting tendons of that muscle group. Sports that involve jumping or sudden acceleration and stopping such as basketball, football, soccer, and court sports are common causes of hamstring pulls. Hamstring pulls will result in sudden and sharp pain and may even cause a tearing or popping sensation when they occur. Hamstring pulls are often classified on a three point scale; one is a muscle pull, two is a mid-grade tear, and three is a complete tear. Class one injuries can be treated with RICE and over-the-counter pain medication, but class two and three injuries require a more focused treatment strategy.

FAQ

Q: How is Active Release Technique (ART®) used to treat sport injuries?
A: ART® is used to treat soft tissue sports injuries using non-invasive protocols that combine physical manipulations and movement at the site of the injury. ART® therapy will identify, isolate, and target the affected area to break up restricting scar tissue and promote increased blood flow and healing.

Q: Why should men opt for chiropractic care?
A: Chiropractic care is one of the largest primary health care professions in Canada, and approximately four and a half million Canadians visit a chiropractor every year for drug-free, non-invasive therapy. Dr. Jay Shephard is a NW Calgary chiropractor who tailors treatment plans to include various modalities and therapies in order to best address men’s health care needs. Before starting any treatment, we evaluate your current health and past history of illness and/or injury to diagnose disorders related to the spine, nervous system, and joints.

Q: What should I expect at my first Physical Rehabilitation appointment?
A: All initial appointments begin with an assessment of your condition or injury. This involves a review of your medical history as well as a neuromusculoskeletal physical examination. By discussing your medical history, your lifestyle, and the sports and activities you enjoy (along with the examination), we can verify your symptoms and better evaluate your condition to develop an effective treatment plan.
