Yes. A chiropractor can help with TMJ when the pain comes from the jaw muscles, the way the joint moves, or the neck and posture habits that load the jaw. Muscle pain is the most common type of TMJ problem, and hands-on care, jaw exercises and habit changes are the treatments with the strongest research support. At Shephard Health in Kensington, Calgary, a TMJ assessment starts with our $67 new patient exam and treatment, and we direct bill most major insurance providers.

TMJ stands for temporomandibular joint: the hinge-and-slide joint in front of each ear that connects your lower jaw to your skull. When people say “I have TMJ”, they usually mean a temporomandibular disorder (TMD), a group of problems with the jaw joint, the chewing muscles, or both. According to the US National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research, TMD affects about 5% of adults and is about twice as common in women as in men.
TMD usually falls into three groups:
For the muscle and movement side of TMD, yes. The best guidance comes from a 2023 clinical practice guideline in The BMJ, built on a large review of randomized trials for chronic TMD pain. It made strong recommendations for:
It also made a conditional recommendation for manipulation. Most of that list is exactly what a chiropractor who treats TMJ does. The same guideline advised against irreversible options, such as splints that permanently change your bite and joint surgery to remove the disc.
Chiropractic care is not the answer for everything. Tooth pain, a cracked tooth, or a bite that changed after dental work need your dentist, and we tell you when that is what we find. You can read more about how we work as a TMJ chiropractor in Calgary.
Some patients also get cold laser therapy alongside hands-on care. Research on laser for TMJ pain is mixed, so it is an add-on, not the main treatment.
Your first visit takes about an hour:
Bring your benefits card: we direct bill most major insurance providers, and you do not need a referral to see a chiropractor in Alberta. For the general visit, see what to expect on your first chiropractic visit.
It depends on the cause and how long you have had it. Muscle-related jaw pain often eases within a few weeks of treatment and home exercise. Disc problems and long-standing pain take longer. We recheck your mouth opening and pain at each visit, so you can see whether the plan is working. If it is not, we change it or refer you.
All three can help, and each sees a different part of the problem:
Many people start with whoever they can see fastest. Hands-on care is conservative and reversible, which is where experts recommend TMD treatment starts.
Many people get lasting relief once the muscles settle and they change the habits that were loading the jaw. TMJ pain can come back with stress or clenching, so keep up the home exercises.
Work on tight jaw muscles feels tender, like firm pressure on a sore spot. It should not be sharp, and we adjust the pressure as we go.
Gentle jaw mobilization is common. Most of the work is on the jaw muscles and the neck, and you do not need forceful jaw cracking.
