How Much Does a Chiropractor Cost in Calgary? (2026 Prices + Direct Billing)

In Calgary, a first chiropractic visit (assessment plus treatment) usually costs between $80 and $150, and follow-up visits usually cost between $50 and $90. Alberta Health Care does not pay for routine chiropractic care, so most people pay through extended health benefits, a WCB or car accident claim, or out of pocket. At Shephard Health, a new patient visit is $67 for the exam and first treatment, and we direct bill most major insurance providers, so you usually pay only the part your plan does not cover.

We direct bill your insurance

Shephard Health sends your claim straight to your insurer, most major providers included. No paying the full fee up front, no receipts to submit, no waiting weeks for a refund. Bring your benefits card and we can often confirm your coverage during your visit. How our direct billing works.

What changes the price of a chiropractor visit?

Two clinics can charge very different fees for what looks like the same visit. The main reasons:

  • First visit or follow-up. The first visit takes longer. The chiropractor takes your health history, examines how you move, tests nerves and muscles, and explains what is going on before treatment starts. Follow-ups are shorter and focus on treatment.
  • Length of the visit. A quick adjustment costs less than a longer visit that combines adjustments with soft tissue work or rehab exercises.
  • What is included. Some clinics add tools such as Active Release Technique, Graston, laser or shockwave therapy to a visit. Others charge for them separately.
  • X-rays. Most people do not need X-rays. When they are medically needed, they are usually an extra cost or a referral.
  • Packages and memberships. Some clinics sell prepaid visit packages. Read the terms before you commit to a large package on your first day.

How much does a chiropractor cost with insurance?

Most extended health plans in Alberta cover chiropractic care as a paramedical benefit. Plans usually set a dollar limit per visit, a yearly maximum, or both, and some share one yearly maximum between chiropractic, physiotherapy and massage therapy. With good benefits, many people pay little or nothing per visit until they reach the yearly limit.

This is where direct billing matters. Without it, you pay the full fee at the counter, then send receipts to your insurer and wait for the money to come back. At Shephard Health we bill your insurer for you, so at the counter you pay only your share, if any. Before your first visit, check these with your insurer or benefits app:

  • Your per-visit limit and yearly maximum for chiropractic care
  • How much of this year’s maximum you have already used
  • Whether chiropractic shares a maximum with physiotherapy or massage
  • Whether your plan needs a doctor’s referral (most do not)

Not sure where to start? Our direct billing checklist lists what to bring to your first visit.

How much does a chiropractor cost without insurance?

Without insurance, you pay the full fee: usually $80 to $150 for the first visit and $50 to $90 for each follow-up in Calgary. A single adjustment on its own is at the lower end, and a longer visit with soft tissue work or rehab is at the higher end. Most clinics charge per visit, not per hour. At Shephard Health, the new patient exam and first treatment is $67 with or without insurance.

Two ways to lower the cost without insurance: ask for a written plan so you know the total up front, and keep your receipts for your taxes (see below).

Can I claim chiropractor visits on my taxes?

Yes. In Alberta, chiropractors are authorized medical practitioners for the Canada Revenue Agency’s medical expense tax credit, so amounts you paid yourself (and your insurance did not repay) can count as eligible medical expenses on your tax return. Keep every receipt. With direct billing, your receipt shows what your plan paid and what you paid, which makes this easy.

Is chiropractic covered by Alberta Health Care?

No, not for most people. Alberta removed chiropractic care from the Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan (AHCIP) in 2009, so your Alberta health card does not pay for routine chiropractic visits. There are some exceptions:

  • Seniors 65 and older. The Coverage for Seniors program, run by Alberta Blue Cross, pays up to $25 a visit, to a maximum of $200 per person each benefit year.
  • Workplace injuries. WCB Alberta pays for chiropractic care for accepted work injuries. See our WCB injury care page.
  • Car accidents. Your auto insurance accident benefits (often called Section B) pay for treatment of injuries from a collision. See motor vehicle accident care.
  • AISH and other programs. AISH can help pay for health services such as chiropractic care. Ask your AISH worker what applies to you.

How often should I see a chiropractor, and what does that cost in total?

It depends on the problem, how long you have had it, and how fast you respond to care. A new, simple strain often settles in a few visits over two to four weeks. A problem you have had for months usually needs more visits, spread out as you improve. Your chiropractor should give you a plan with an expected number of visits and a date to check your progress, not an open-ended schedule.

A simple way to budget: first visit fee + (number of follow-ups x follow-up fee), minus what your insurance pays. For example, a first visit plus 4 follow-ups at $70 is about $350 before insurance. With a plan that pays most of each visit and direct billing, your share can be much lower. More detail in how often you should see a chiropractor.

How to find an affordable chiropractor in Calgary (without cutting corners)

  • Use your benefits and ask for direct billing. It is the biggest saving for most people, and it means no large up-front payment.
  • Look for a new patient offer that includes a real assessment, not only a quick adjustment.
  • Ask for a written plan with the expected number of visits and the cost of each one.
  • Use the right payer. If your injury came from work or a car accident, use your WCB or auto claim first, so your private benefits stay available for other care.
  • Do home exercises. Doing the exercises your chiropractor gives you often means fewer visits.

Are chiropractic adjustments good for you?

For many people with low back pain, neck pain and some kinds of headache, research shows spinal manipulation can reduce pain and improve movement, especially when it is combined with exercise and advice to stay active. Adjustments are generally safe when a licensed chiropractor performs them after a proper assessment. Mild soreness for a day or two afterwards is common. Serious side effects are rare. A good chiropractor checks for warning signs first and tells you when another type of care is a better fit. Read more in Is a chiropractic adjustment safe? and evidence-based chiropractic care.

What are red flags when choosing a chiropractor?

  • No health history or physical exam before treatment starts
  • Pressure to prepay for a large package of visits on your first day
  • A plan with no end date and no progress checks
  • Routine X-rays for everyone, whatever the problem
  • Claims that chiropractic care cures unrelated diseases
  • Advice to stop medical treatment your doctor prescribed
  • No clear price list, or no receipt for your insurer

Every chiropractor in Alberta must be registered with the College of Chiropractors of Alberta. You can ask to see a chiropractor’s registration.

Can I walk into a chiropractor in Calgary?

Some Calgary clinics take walk-ins, but most work by appointment so the chiropractor has time for a proper assessment. Shephard Health offers same-day appointments: book online and you can often be seen the same day. Online booking is faster than walking in, because you know your time is held.

What happens at a first visit at Shephard Health?

Your first visit takes about an hour. Your chiropractor goes through your health history and your current pain, examines how you move, and explains what is causing the problem. If it is safe, treatment starts the same day. You leave with a plan and the expected cost. Bring your benefits card so we can direct bill your insurer. Do I pay up front, or does the clinic bill my insurance?

It depends on the clinic. Shephard Health direct bills most major insurance providers, so you pay only the balance your plan does not cover.

Does Alberta Blue Cross cover chiropractic?

Many Alberta Blue Cross plans include chiropractic care, with limits that depend on your plan. Seniors 65 and older get $25 a visit, up to $200 a benefit year, through Coverage for Seniors.

Do I need a doctor’s referral to see a chiropractor in Alberta?

No. You can book directly. Some insurance plans ask for a referral, so check your plan.

How much does a chiropractic adjustment cost?

Is a chiropractor a doctor?

Chiropractors are not medical doctors. They are regulated primary health care providers who train for at least seven years at university level and use the title Doctor of Chiropractic. In Alberta you can see one without a doctor’s referral.

Is a cheap chiropractor worth it?

Price alone does not tell you much. A low fee with no assessment can cost more over time if the real problem is missed. Look for a proper first exam, a clear plan and direct billing.
